Thursday, September 24th, 2009

The E100 Bible Reading Challenge comes from a partnership between Bible Society New Zealand, Scripture Union and Wycliffe Bible Translators. It’s a great tool to help churches get Kiwi Christians back into reading their Bibles.

The Lost Symbol Review

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Last week, we saw a review of Dan Brown’s new book ‘The Lost Symbol’.

Greg Clarke gave an excellent overview and also challenged the concepts put forward by the book. It was interesting to be reminded that a lot of what was written in this book reflects the views of our culture towards religion. Though I’m not much of a reader myself, I’m almost considering reading ‘The Lost Symbol’ in order to engage in conversations with non-Christians who may be reading it. It appears to be such a great opportunity to bring the truth of Jesus Christ to those around us.

Check out the review here.

Godley Head Photos

Just looking through the photos from the Saturday Stroll, looks like it was amazing!

Nathan Rich says:

“The Saturday stroll was another great outing! After a bleak start with clouds rolling in, the sun broke through and left some people feeling a wee bit too warm. The walk itself wasn’t very strenuous, only taking about one hour each way.  At the gun emplacement we stopped to take a look around and have lunch. There were many dark and scary-looking tunnels to explore and with Matt Price leading the charge, a brave few went creeping through the unknown! Soon afterwards the NZ army turned up looking ready for any sign of invasion! As it happened they were just doing a little exploring of their own, and with a sweet smile from Rachel Reed, they decided to unlock the top secret parts of the battlement so that we could look around. The top secret parts included a trip into the room the furthest underground which was used as the main ammunition chamber and supposedly wouldn’t collapse or blow up even if the ground above was fired upon by the enemy! After a scrumptious shared lunch spent basking in the sun we slowly meandered back to the real world….”

EVENT: The Gospels – can they be trusted?

canta-God...An open discussion evening investigating the reliability of the New Testament and the claims made about Jesus Christ.

Canta in the third term raised some controversial issues regarding the reliablity of the accounts of Jesus.

This discussion evening will provide you with an opportunity to address some of the claims which have been made by Christians, both at the time of Christ, and throughout history.

After a brief introduction, the evening will be open for you to put forward any questions you have.

Dessert will be provided.

Term Prayer Kickoff

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Prayer hands 1As is the Campus Church tradition, we like to start each new term by meeting together for a meal and prayer.
Thankfully we seem to have escaped winter, so this time we’re going to enjoy a barbecue. Please join us as we acknowledge God’s sovereignty and commit the term to Him, reminding ourselves that our aim is to glorify God in everything. This is an important way to show your partnership in the gospel. Hope to see you all there. RSVP would be appreciated.

Details: meeting at the Dukes. Dinner will be provided and will begin at 5pm, followed by prayer at 6pm. Any contributions to drinks would be great!

Saturday Stroll

godley-head-223 Isn’t God great?! And isn’t His creation worth enjoying and sharing with others?!

Invite your friends and join us for a walk round Godley Head (in the Sumner   direction). It follows some beautiful coastline, and there is a rundown gun emplacement at the end, with tunnels which can be explored. There’ll be a picnic at some point too! A nice break to aim for if you’re a student.

Saturday 19th September

Please RSVP (yani.dubin@gmail.com) if you are able to bring a car, specifying how many people you can take in total. We will rendezvous at the UCSA at 9AM before departing for Taylor’s Mistake, from which the walk will commence. Yani will divide people up into cars from the UCSA, but needs to ensure in advance that there are enough willing drivers.

The walk is across an exposed headland with no shade, and the time spent in the sun will be upwards of five hours. Please ensure you have adequate sun protection (sunscreen, hats, umbrellas, etc), and as the breezes may be cold, something warm and/or windproof would be wise. Bring sufficient drinking water for yourself, however Yani will endeavor to bring extra and divide it up amongst the able-bodied.

It will be a picnic lunch affair, so please bring something which can be shared around. Picnic blankies are, of course, highly approved of. Hampers however are right out, as they would need to be lugged quite a ways. There won’t be any cooking facilities. It would be best if people combine backpacks where convenient so that people can either take turns amongst their group, or nominate a pack mule. This could be sorted amongst your carpool on the day.

Forgiveness or go to Hell?

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

It’s great to fill our minds with the word of God. To help you do that, here’s a link to a talk by Ian Powell. I’m sure if you’re reading this you should be able to allocate 45 minutes of your time to learn about how seriously God takes forgiveness. The talk is based on Matthew 6:12, in the context of the Lord’s prayer. I think this is a challenge to all of us…
